It’s been a few years since Google+ was launched in 2011. Looking at it from a social media standpoint, it seems a little unnecessary (which is part of the reason why it’s not as popular as Facebook or Twitter). While this may be the case, Google+ also harnesses all of the company’s services, including important information about its customers. In addition, its posts are indexed directly to Google’s search engine, creating visibility far greater than anything offered through other social media.
Google+ Versus Other Social Media
As I mentioned, Google+ is more than just social media. In order to use Google’s other offerings (such as Gmail, Google Drive, or posting on YouTube), registration for an account required. Today, Google+ has somewhere around 540 million users, with about half using their accounts for social media. While participation seems small in comparison to Facebook’s over 1 billion, major corporations are now placing emphasis on the platform for SEO (search engine optimization) purposes.
Business Pages & Google Reviews
It’s not enough to simply have a Google+ account (much like it’s not enough to only have a Facebook profile). To gain the best visibly you need to have a business page– a primary part of how your presence will be indexed. Additionally, customer reviews (a feature unique to Google’s business pages) are a major player in the searches. Their quality and quantity are extremely important when Google determines your rankings, since they appear both on the search engine and Google Maps.
