There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding content and content mistakes these days, and for good reason. From the text on the homepage of your website to your latest blog post, the content you share with the world reflects back on your company.

If it’s been awhile since you looked over your website or it’s just hasn’t been a priority, you could be hurting your business. Great content often results in more leads, top rankings in search results, and higher conversion rates.

5 content mistakes you might be making on your website:

Not Having Enough Text

People often assume that customers aren’t reading the text on their web pages, and while this might be true, that doesn’t mean you can skimp down to 50 words per page and expect results. As a general rule, you should have a minimum of 250-300 words on each page of your website.

Customers come to your site for a reason. If they can’t find anything of value or struggle to get an understanding of your services, the chances of them contacting you are slim.

In addition, it’s difficult to use keywords if there’s no text on your pages. If you want to be found by search engines, keywords are a must.

Having Too Much Text

If every page of your website has one giant block of text, it not only becomes difficult to read, but many of your visitors will give up and move on. There is a fine balance between too much text and blank pages. Share important information, but don’t add in so much fluff that your content turns into an impenetrable wall.

This is where presentation comes in. You want to make it as easy as possible for visitors to read or skim your content. Make sure you are using appropriate headings and utilize bullet points or numbered lists; they work wonders for making text look neat and clean.

Images, videos, and other design elements are great for breaking up text blocks as well as making your site visually appealing.

Letting SEO Take Over Your Content

Obviously SEO is important, but if you’re squeezing keywords into every other sentence your content starts to sound unnatural. Don’t sacrifice quality content for the sake of fitting one more key phrase into your services page.

A good way to fix this issue is to write your content first and then strategically place your keywords inside of the finished product. This is especially important for blog posts.

People read your posts to learn, to be entertained, or to have a questions answered- not to read a jumble of keywords.

Creating Tons of Content Because “You Should”

Yes, content is important, but if you’re pumping out new content on your blog or website every day, there’s a good chance it’s probably lacking in quality.

There’s no point in sharing 20 articles a week if no one is reading them. Take time to learn about your audience. What questions are they asking? What are their interests? What problem can your services solve?

Slow down and focus on creating high-quality, engaging content. Then, make it a goal to review and measure the effectiveness of your content and make changes as needed.

You Are Not Sharing Your Content on Social Media

If social media isn’t part of your current content marketing strategy, it’s time to jump on board the social train. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn not only allow customers or clients to engage with you, they make it possible to grow your audience and reach new customers.

Once you have published a blog post on your website, share it on various other channels to drive traffic to your site and to raise awareness about your company.

Image galleries, videos, and services are also great for sharing.
